Indeed, A1 and A3 are just two sides of the same coin. Now logicians and semanticists take proper names to be the paradigmatic cases of singular terms, i.e. the expressions that get translated in formal language by the constants 'a', 'b', 'c', etc. Expressions such as 'this', 'that', 'today', and the like are singular terms as well. If we focus on natural language, the paradigmatic cases of singular reference turn out to be proper names such as 'Mary', 'Budapest', 'Maradona', and demonstratives such as 'this' and 'that'. Indeed, when singling out an object of discourse we often end up using one of these expressions. The category of singular terms in natural language expands beyond the types of expression which, in everyday speech, we characterize as proper names. It has thus been recognized that in natural language we have at least two categories of singular terms: proper names and demonstratives.9 Thus we can, following Anscombe, argue that if 'I' is a referential term (A1), then • A4
